For decades, my clients who are deeply immersed in their spiritual journey have asked me the same question: Jafree, how do you surrender?
I often tell them this is a trick question, not because it is unanswerable, but because the very premise reveals a misunderstanding of what surrender truly is. Many people think of surrender as something to do—a task to check off their list at a specific time of day.
Others mistakenly perceive surrender as a negative act, equating it with giving up on their dreams or relinquishing control to the whims of the Universe. However, this perspective is equally misleading. Your free will plays an essential role in shaping your future. You are not merely a passive observer; you are an active co-creator of this reality alongside the Divine.
Having walked a spiritual path for 38 years, I have discovered one essential truth about surrender: it is not a destination or a momentary action—it is an ongoing journey. Surrender never truly ends. The moment you stop surrendering to life, the ego sneaks back into the driver’s seat, deluding itself into thinking it is in control of the simulation. The mind, so deeply attached to its imagination, convinces itself that it is the sole creator of your experience.
Yet, surrender is neither about giving up nor about “doing” anything. It is a profound act of giving in—merging with the flow of life and aligning with the infinite wisdom of the Universe. True surrender is a sacred practice of allowing life to unfold without resistance, trusting that every twist and turn is perfectly orchestrated for your highest evolution.
This gentle art of surrender is at the heart of every spiritual path. When embraced fully, it opens the door to an awakening of Buddha-like clarity and peace, where the illusion of control dissolves and you experience life as it truly is—an extraordinary, divine unfolding.
"When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be." – Lao Tzu
When you surrender, something deep within you releases its tight, unrelenting grip on life. You stop believing that you alone know the best version of how your life should unfold, and instead, you hand it all over to God. In this act of trust, you recognize that the Universe is already working tirelessly to fulfill your deepest needs and desires. Your only task is to let go and invite an unwavering fortress of trust to guide you.
Surrender feels like the effortless trust you place in your body to breathe. You are not the one commanding each breath—it is the breath of life itself flowing through you, breathing you.
True surrender is not a doing, nor is it about giving up. It is a sacred act of giving in—a merging with the infinite wisdom of the Universe. In this union, you discover the profound beauty of allowing life to unfold without resistance. You come to trust that every twist, turn, and detour is divinely orchestrated for your highest growth. This is the core of every spiritual path and, when embraced fully, it paves the way for an awakening of Buddha-like clarity and peace.
Yet, for many, surrender is misunderstood. Some see it as a negative act, equating it with giving up on their dreams or allowing the Universe to dictate their destiny. This perspective is misleading. Your free will is an essential component of creation. You are not a mere bystander in this life—you are an active co-creator with the Divine, shaping your reality with every thought, feeling, and intention.
At first, surrender may feel terrifying. The mind, addicted to its illusions of control and certainty, begins to protest: What if I fail? What if letting go causes me to lose everything—or even die? The ego, brilliant in its theatrics, fills us with fear to maintain its dominance.
But true surrender is not about losing; it is about discovering. It is the recognition of a deeper truth within you—a truth that transcends the limitations and fears of the ego. Imagine everything you know and believe being held within a small glass of water. Surrender is like pouring that water into the vast, boundless ocean. You do not lose; you expand. You merge with everything.
This is the essence of surrender: an act of profound trust, a leap into the infinite, and a gateway to the divine. When you let go of resistance, you open yourself to the extraordinary flow of life, discovering that you were never truly separate from the ocean of existence—you are it.
The Secret Doorway to Enlightenment
Surrender is the secret doorway to enlightenment. Its beauty lies in its elusive simplicity—it is easy to grasp, yet just as easy to forget. Again and again, you will lose your way, pulled back into the illusions of control crafted by the ego. The ego is ever eager to take hold of the steering wheel, not realizing that the steering column is not fully connected to the vehicle of life.
This is the paradox of surrender: it requires no action, yet it is the ultimate act of trust. It is a divine agreement with reality, a profound decision to stop resisting the current of life and instead merge with it, becoming one with all that is.
In this sacred space of surrender, you awaken to a profound truth: life is not happening to you; it is happening for you. Every experience—whether a burst of joy or a wave of pain—becomes a teacher, lovingly guiding you back to the infinite presence within.
To surrender is to step through the secret doorway, leaving behind the struggle and discovering the vast ocean of peace, freedom, and enlightenment that has always been waiting on the other side.
How to ‘Practice’ Surrender
Pause and Breathe:
In moments of tension or fear, pause. Close your eyes and take a long, deep breath. Feel the tightness or resistance within your body, like a knot yearning to unravel. Allow it to soften, releasing its grip with each exhale.Ask, “What Am I Holding Onto?”
Surrender often begins with awareness. Reflect on what you are clinging to. Maybe it’s a belief, fear, or expectation. Gently observe your mind without judgment. You may find that the very act of noticing brings clarity and liberation.Trust the Unknown:
Surrender requires trust, not blind faith. It’s a quiet knowing that the Universe is always working in your favor. Whisper to yourself, Life is unfolding perfectly, even if I cannot yet see the whole picture.Embrace Vulnerability:
To surrender is to open your heart. It invites you to step into the unknown with courage, allowing yourself to feel deeply and be moved by the mysteries of existence. Remember your vulnerability is not your weakness. It is your greatest strength.Let the Divine Lead:
Imagine handing over your worries and plans to the Universe as if offering them to a trusted friend. Visualize your burdens dissolving into the vastness of divine intelligence, knowing they will be handled with perfect timing and care.
The Miracle of Surrender
Miracles are not rare. They are the natural expression of a heart fully aligned with the infinite. The moment surrender flows through you, life reveals its magic. Miracles become your daily companions and challenges that once loomed large dissolve effortlessly, like morning mist kissed by the rising sun. In their place, you discover a profound sense of grace and ease, as if life itself is conspiring in your favor.
Surrender is both endless and ever-beginning. It arises in the instant you stop resisting the current of life and allow yourself to be carried by the Divine. The sacred river of existence flows not around you but through you, carrying you to a freedom so expansive it cannot be contained by the mind. In this enlightened state, you align perfectly with the pulse of creation and rediscover the pure joy of simply being.
To surrender is to let life dance within you, as it is, without judgment or resistance. It invites you into a space of the deepest healing. Meeting each moment with trust, wonder, and a heart wide open to the unknown. Life is not something to control or endure. Life is here, now, calling you to embrace it fully.
When you open yourself to this sacred flow, you step into a space of infinite connection and create communion. Your soul is here to experience the vastness of the Universe. In this union, you no longer see life as separate or external; you are life itself, infinite and whole, living each moment as a miracle unfolding.
