How to Trust in God

There comes a turning point in every soul’s journey when the illusion of separation begins to crack. The ego’s carefully constructed architecture of control, security, and safety starts to tremble. And in that quivering moment, a greater spiritual awareness naturally begins to rise.

To the ego, this may feel like a frightening free fall into the unknown. But ironically, it is a profoundly holy moment. It is the sacred breath before the ego’s final bow. A deeper surrender begins moving through your bones, whispering into the foundation of your being, “You can trust life.”

“God doesn’t belong to religion. God belongs to the silence you find when you stop running.” ~ Elina Salonen

To trust in God is not a task to check off on your spiritual to-do list. It’s not like drinking your green juice or attending a silent retreat. It’s not a belief you argue about over green tea with friends in yoga pants or debate with a restless mind late at night. No, trusting in God is the wild, radiant act of letting go so fully that even your letting go gets burned away.

It is the softest fall into the arms of a love so wide it cannot be measured, so still it contains the thunder, and so ancient it has been waiting for you longer than time can remember. And it often shows up the strongest when your greatest fear comes to sit beside you in bed.

To truly trust God, we must first come to know what we are trusting. How can the heart surrender to something it does not fully understand or recognize?

So, exactly what is God?

If you look deep enough into this inquiry, you will see that God is not the idea of God. That’s what throws most people off. They’re still trying to reach out for a concept, fall in love with an image, or follow the wisdom from some theological pamphlet with rules and creeds printed on glossy, dog-eared paper. The real God is not that.

God is neither male nor female, nor is it form or formless. God is not just something high up in the sky or only found in temples with a well-worshipped guru’s shrine. God is the living, breathing intimacy that pulses beneath every atom in the Universe.

God is the silence behind your laughter, the ache inside your longing, the holy intelligence that orchestrates the movements of all the stars in our galaxy. It is even responsible for the growth of your toenails. You are always held in it, always saturated by it, and literally drenched in God, even when you don’t believe there is a God.

So how do we develop trust for something that is already so intimately within us?

You start by becoming quiet enough to feel it. Trust blossoms naturally when you stop the mind from searching outside for satisfaction and start listening deeper inside. This silent innermost essence is where the Divine has always been found. The more you surrender to this intimate stillness, the more undeniable God becomes.

The experience of trust naturally arises when we stop trying to force the outer world to fit our will, and begin to relax and be open to the mysterious holy will of the One who breathes us. That One is not separate from you. It is you, wearing your face and breathing this very breath. It is born out of your deepest inquiry into yourself. It is the feeling of infinite safety that has been patiently waiting for your entire life.

“When I gave up needing to be right, the Beloved walked in and handed me peace.” ~ Jaya Ananda

We don’t need to be perfect to trust in God. We don’t need to pray the right words, chant the right mantras, or sit in lotus like a spiritual Instagram influencer. Trust is not a performance, and it’s definitely not polished.

Trust often feels quite messy, especially in the beginning. It can come after a night drenched in tears, nose full of snot, and a heart that somehow still beams with gratitude for the life you have. It is all of you showing up in your realness and saying, “Here I am. I don’t know what the heck I’m doing, but I’m willing to surrender and be guided.”

And when that willingness cracks your heart open, even just for a breath, or the blink of an eye, the whole universe rearranges itself around your surrender.

Through this total surrender to God, the birds start singing songs that suspiciously sound like answers. The wind begins brushing your skin like it’s calling out your name. Strangers smile at you with eyes of sweet angels in disguise. Your spiritual path begins to reveal itself one stone at a time, and suddenly you’re not so afraid of the unknown anymore. Because now you’re walking with the Beloved.

“The divine doesn’t knock. It seeps in through the cracks you were ashamed to see.” ~ Mateo Reyes

Trusting in God means you stop making fear and worry your main compass. It is learning how to breathe again from a relaxed belly and resting more often in your innermost being. It is a softening into the center of your normal chaos. It is choosing presence over desire, especially when the past wants to drag you back into drama, or the future tries to seduce you into further anxiety.

Trust is discovered only in this moment.
In this infinite millisecond of Now,
where God is always waiting for you.

You are never too late, too lost, or too broken to learn how to trust. And you are not ‘too much’ for God to handle either. The mind may believe otherwise, but God doesn’t speak to you in a demand. God speaks in a deep, soft presence that quietly nudges you with this gentle, electric aliveness which hums underneath our skin when we say yes to what is.

“When truth is near, it does not shout. It wraps you in silence and sings to your bones.” ~ Amara Deva

And each time you doubt in God, when you fall from believing God is real, and rage against the mystery and curse its silence, God is still there. Waiting patiently, lovingly, and smiling behind every solemn face that passes by.

So if you’ve forgotten how to trust, come back to your breath. Put your hands on your heart. Feel the warmth there. That is God, knocking softly on your chest. This warmth is not meant to be worshipped but to be deeply felt and welcomed into your core.

It’s there to nurture you on those dark rainy nights when you’re the most alone, and to hold your hand when you think nobody cares about you. This warmth is a guide to show you the way home. It speaks through your intuition, your greatest joy, and that sacred knowing that says God has never, ever left you.

“God is not the destination. God is the warmth you feel when you realize you never left.” ~ Talia Noor

Trusting in God is not something you need to earn. It is your birthright, and written inside your DNA. It is hidden inside your tears, within your belly laughs, and in those quiet nights of loneliness and confusion.

Trust doesn’t come from knowing everything will turn out the way you planned. It comes from realizing that everything (absolutely everything) is already being held by a love so vastly intelligent, and so exquisitely tender, that even your pain has an intelligent purpose in its design. It is who you are when you stop pretending to be what you are not.

So let the armor fall off. Let your mind take a long, deep rest and allow your soul to remember that you are always held. Let go of your fears and surrender to feeling that you are already home. There is always a ray of light shining in the darkness. And real trust is simply the art of letting that truth in.
